The Basis Of All Sin by Mark Sanford

It is written “Pride goes before the fall.” This is true but self-centeredness goes before all sin.

Even the greatest creature under God, Lucifer, lost his position in heaven because of self-centeredness. Did Lucifer lust for the flesh or commit sins of slothfulness? No, because his nature is spirit and these things are meaningless to an angel. But, he did not want to kneel before God and his total preoccupation with self was his undoing.

A young woman seeks the attention of a man she favors. The woman may do everything she knows to get his attention, but to no avail. Her deep admiration for the man can turn to hatred if she allows herself to accept a self centered attitude rather than realizing that affection is a two way street. All this can transpire without the man ever knowing anything about her feelings and she may even regress to putting him down in her conversations with others. The woman is committing serious sin as the result of nothing more than self-centeredness.

A young man lives at home and is unwilling to put out enough effort to get a job that will support him. So, because of his sloth, he lives off of his parents who love him and wish only the best for him. If he were considerate of his parents rather than self-absorbed, he would find that job that suited him and relieve the burden on his parents.

A rather good-looking woman lives next door to a handsome young man. The only problem is that the woman is married. Now, he or she can fall into sin at any time by allowing themselves to seek their interest over that of the woman’s husband.

Every sin is based in self-centeredness. From the most trivial, a child taking another child’s toy, to the most severe – the fall of the greatest being under God. Remember, when you are in the middle of temptation it is truly a temptation to test your self -centeredness, whether it is from God, the devil, the people around you or yourself. How you accept or reject self-centeredness will determine your eternal destiny.
