Have The Perfect Pout! Lips Made For Kissing

Author: Caroline Husbands

Believe it or not but the skin on your lips is even more delicate than the skin round your eyes. This is because the outermost protective layer of skin is extremely thin and has hardly any oil glands to help prevent them from drying out. Consequently, moisture evaporates very quickly causing lips to become sore and chapped or even cracked. This is why, before you reach for the red lipstick, it is particularly important to ensure you have healthy and moist lip tissue.

Lips are an attractive facial feature which can easily be maintained if you follow these four simple steps:

Exfoliate A weekly exfoliation with either a soft toothbrush or your usual facial scrub can help to smooth your lips. Do remember to be very gentle and not to scrub too hard.

Moisturise Due to their delicate make-up, lips are constantly exposed to harsh and damaging conditions such as exposure to cold winds, air conditioning or central heating. Since all these can speed up the rate of moisture loss from the lips and rapidly dry them out you should always protect your lips with a good moisture barrier. Vaseline is very good for this and should be massaged into and around the edges of the lips helping to plump out fine lines. A subtle shade of lipstick or lipgloss are another options which will also give your lips good protection as well as a hint of colour. Matt lipsticks can sometimes be too drying so it is preferable to avoid these.

Exercise To work your jaw and lips and to keep your muscles toned, try saying, ooo, eee, ooo, eee several times a day. Also, don't forget to smile, which not only brightens your whole face but also exercises your facial muscles and helps to keep them healthy.

Protection Lips are particularly vulnerable to damage from exposure to the sun since they have very little of their own melanin which is the skin's natural sun protector. Lips need to be protected from the sun's ultraviolet rays all year round, regardless of whether it is a sunny or a dull day. Since lips can burn easily, it is always advisable to use a lipstick or lip balm that contains a sunscreen of at least Sun Protection Factor 15 whether you are on holiday in Barbados or skiing in the Alps. Also, don't forget to use a water resistant sunscreen if you venture into the water.
